About 1.5 million cars, including private vehicles and motorcycles, will stop circulating next Thursday, February 1, in Bogota, on the occasion of a new Day without a car and without a motorcycle – Dia sin carro y moto. The day will begin at 5:00 in the morning and conclude at 7:30 in the evening.
According to the District Department of Mobility, this time around 2.5 million bicycle users are expected to take to the streets, who will enjoy the 540 kilometers of bike paths arranged for the day. In the case of Transmilenio, the administration foresees an increase of 5% in the number of users, as well as 20% for those who bet on the zonal component of the SITP (blue buses).
In that line, the system reported that next Thursday will put into operation 100% of its available fleet: 2,992 buses distributed in 1,767 trunks, 265 dual and 960 feeders. The idea is to serve users in periods of maximum demand, between 5:00 and 9:00 in the morning and between 4:00 in the afternoon and 8:00 at night.
So where can we find these 540 kilometers of bike paths to use on this special day? Below you can find an interactive map with all the cicloruta’s:
Additionally, providing that several companies flex their schedules of entry and exit, Transmilenio will increase the supply of trunk frequencies in the valley periods, between 9:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. Regarding the dual services, they will share the roadway with the Sévima Carrera cycle path, which is why they will operate normally due to their working day plans. Meanwhile, the food services will have reinforcements in their frequencies, mainly in Engativá and Kennedy.
According to the District, the 2018 day will be a tribute to pedestrians, so different activities are planned such as health assessments, walks and traffic police checks, added to caravans on bicycles. “We are all pedestrians, we all start our journeys on foot and we want there to be a better environment for the walk in Bogota,” said the Secretary of Mobility, Juan Pablo Bocarejo.
For its part, in an exercise that is already common, the Ministry of Environment will monitor the air quality and noise levels in the capital. The air control points, eight in total, will be distributed in the towns of Kennedy, Bosa, Suba, Engativá, Fontibón and Mártires. For its part, noise measurement will be made in the corridors of Carrera Septima, Calle 80, Autopista Norte, Calle 13 and Avenida Caracas.
In addition, cargo transport controls are added to the west of the city, where the air quality monitoring stations (Kennedy and Carvajal) report levels of contamination higher than those of the rest of Bogotá.
Finally, the Ministry of Health will install 23 points for citizens to review their cardiovascular conditions through the taking of tension, weight and height, glucometry, waist circumference and testing of healthy lifestyles. “The fact of not allowing the mobilization in private vehicles and encouraging the use of bicycles and walking make it the best vaccine against diseases,” said Luis Gonzalo Morales, Secretary of Health.
